Zelensky states Ukraine ‘doesn’t need’ China

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated that his country does not need security guarantees from China, citing Beijing’s failure to prevent or halt the conflict with Russia. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Zelensky emphasized that China did nothing to stop the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and took no action when hostilities escalated in February 2022.

“Therefore, we do not need guarantors who were absent when Ukraine truly needed support,” he said.

The remarks followed Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s suggestion that security guarantees for Ukraine could be provided by UN Security Council members, including China, as long as they are “equal” and not directed against Russia.

China has maintained a neutral stance in the Ukraine conflict, refusing to impose sanctions on Russia and advocating for peace talks. In 2023, Beijing released a 12-point memorandum calling for a ceasefire, protection of civilians, and an end to unilateral sanctions. After the recent Alaska summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, China expressed support for any efforts that promote a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
